Jonathan Creek
No walk is too short - a hike up and down a mountain or a walk around Main Street. Then, after the walk, it is a treat to cool off in mountain water.
There are lots of creeks - Richland Creek, Jonathan Creek, Bent Creek, Cove Creek, Hemphill Creek, and more. There are also special spots we find on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
There are two special spots on the Blue Ridge Parkway - Yellowstone Prong Falls at Graveyard fields and across the road from the Woodfin Cascades Overlook. Both have shaded footpaths that take us up to a series of small waterfalls and areas that are just the right size for a cool dip. In both areas I don't even have to swim. I just lay down and relax. (I am a little lazy girl.)

View at Purchase Knob
Drive down Tanner Trail on Ad Tate Knob in the Utah Mountains. Turn right onto Jonathan Creek Road. Turn left at Hemphill Road and drive beside Hemphill Creek, working your way up to the top. What do you find? The Appalachian Highlands Science Learning - part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
This 530-acre property was donated to the Park in August 2000 after serving as a private residence for over thirty years. It is at 5,000 feet elevation with views in all directions.

Walk to Cabin
The highest preserved cabin in the Smoky Mountain National Park is the John Love Ferguson Cabin. It sits 5,000 feet above sea level, just a short drive down the mountain from the Science Center on Purchase Knob. It was built around 1870.

Carolina Mountain Trail
Surrounded by the Southern Appalachian Mountains near Asheville, North Carolina, the North Carolina Arboretum is in a beautiful natural garden setting. The Arboretum offers a wide range of activities - center for education, research, conservation, demonstrations and lots of hiking trails (easy and moderate).
We especially enjoy walking the Bent Creek Trail and the Carolina Mountain Trail.

Sequoia and Dad
One of the most pleasant little hikes (1.4 miles) is found along the Blue Ridge Parkway milepost 431. It climbs to the summit of over 6,400 feet. I take little rests along the way because I get tired.
Joy is Everywhere

This is one of those special moments when you catch me smiling. When we are hiking and find a nice stream of cool water I just love to take a little walk into the stream. This is not my first stream, I have to admit. You should have seen my face when I saw my first stream in North Carolina. I was not smiling. I didn't know what to do. My dad had to convince me to walk into the water. I was a little scared because the experience was new to me.
